Melissa Raftis completed her law degree and graduated from Monash University in Melbourne, Victoria with an LLB. She was subsequently admitted to the Supreme Court of Victoria and the High Court of Australia in August 2001.
She completed her articles at Morrison & Sawyers Lawyers in Kyabram, Victoria before moving to Victorian Legal Aid where she worked for five years. It was during this time that Melissa was promoted to Senior Family Lawyer at the Goulburn Regional Office in Shepparton. Melissa's work at Legal Aid included children's issues, property settlements, child protection, intervention orders, court advocacy and a myriad of other issues assisting the exceptionally broad clientele serviced by a Legal Aid Office.
Melissa was also involved in providing community legal education as was a member of the Goulburn Valley Young Lawyers Group.
It was during this time that she was approached by Shann Family Law from Western Australia who offered her a position with that firm. This involved shifting her entire family to Western Australia to take up this role. She worked at Shann Family Law from May 2007 until December 2010. Melissa practised Family Law exclusively during this period.
Melissa is a member of the Family Law Practitioners Association of Western Australia.
